Surgical Implantation of the Heartmate II Left Ventricular Assist Device

Friday, January 22, 2010

The HeartMate II is a continuous flow, second generation left ventricular assist device (LVAD).  This pump has been implanted for bridge to transplant and destination therapy indications.  This video describes the technical aspects involved in the surgical implantation of the HeartMate II LVAD.  The concomitant closure of a patent foramen ovale is also performed in this patient.  The techniques for developing the subrectus LVAD pocket, insertion of the left ventricular apical cannula, anastomosis of the outflow conduit to the ascending aorta, and tunneling of the percutaneous driveline are reviewed.
