This qualitative study explores the views and experiences of patients and staff involved in prehabilitation of elective patients undergoing cardiac surgery. This was nested within a wider randomized controlled trial comparing elective cardiac surgery patients undergoing a six-week prehabilitation program against those assigned to usual care.

This single center, open RCT compared patients’ satisfaction with local (LA) or general anesthesia (GA) for video-assisted thoracoscopy. Fifty patients were allocated to GA and 57 to LA. Patient satisfaction did not differ significantly for anesthesiology care, general perioperative care, or recovery after surgery.

The outcome of perioperative prophylactic glucocorticoids for heart surgery in infants was unknown, and this study aimed to determine the effectiveness using a multicenter, randomized trial. Out of the infants who received either a dose of methylprednisolone or a placebo, the likelihood of a worse outcome did not significantly differ.

According to a recent phase II NOVA study, using botulinum toxin type A in cardiac surgery patients does not reduce the risk of atrial fibrillation overall, but may have some benefit in certain subgroups. Although postoperative AF affects one to two-thirds of patients after cardiac surgery, there is not a standard treatment for it.
