Thursday, February 15, 2024

At the 2024 STS Annual Meeting, CTSNet Editor in Chief Joel Dunning and CTSNet senior editors set out to interview the most knowledgeable CT surgeons from around the world. Stay tuned for more interviews from the meeting.

CTSNet Global Editor Emily Farkas spoke with Professor Cherie Erkmen, a thoracic surgeon at Temple University Health Systems in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, about her presentation on the STS Annual Survey on Surgeon Compensation. Prof. Erkmen presented a portion of the findings of the survey at the meeting, which included compensation disparities based on gender across cardiothoracic surgery specialties. She emphasized the importance of specialty-specific data and granular data assessment in creating meaningful action moving forward.

The two also spoke with Dr. Meghana Helder, an early career cardiac surgeon at Mercy Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. She brought up the importance of the issue of compensation disparities as more women enter the specialty.
