Uniportal VATS is a useful approach to perform wedge resections of intraparenchymal pulmonary nodules without diagnosis and to carry out a lobectomy in cases of non-small cell lung cancer with totally incomplete fissures.
October 30, 2013
Radiotracer-guided localization of pulmonary nodules was introduced in 2000, with subsequent studies confirming its reproducibility and reliability. As more frequent small, asymptomatic masses are being identified, this technique could prevent unnecessary thoracotomies and preserve lung parenchyma.

Extrapleural pneumonectomy is a surgical resection option for the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma. This video shows a right-sided extrapleural pneumonectomy on a 60-year-old woman with mesothelioma.

The anterior cervicothoracic approach was used to remove a desmoid tumor of the thoracic outlet in a 70-year-old male. The chest wall was reconstructed with titanium bars and a polytetrafluoroethylene-patch. The clavicle was fixed using a titanium clip. The postoperative period was uneventful.

Dr. Joel Dunning leads a discussion on VATS and robotic lobectomy, sleeve lobectomy and pneumonectomy, new devices, as well as many other related issues.

Induction chemoradiotherapy is a relative contraindication to VATS lobectomy due to oncological concerns. This video demonstrates a VATS lower lobectomy and radical systematic lymphadenectomy in a 53-year-old male who recurred locally following induction chemoradiotherapy.

The Novalung Interventional Lung Assist (iLA) device is a membrane ventilator that allows for oxygen and carbon dioxide gas exchange to occur by simple diffusion.
April 1, 2012
April 1st 2012 is the 20th Anniversary of VATS lobectomy at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. Twenty years ago, Dr. William Walker performed a left upper lobectomy using a 3-port approach standing in the posterior position. Now approaching his thousandth operation, he discusses his first VATS lobectomy and his current techniques.
