Lung - Transplantation

March 2, 2015
This study evaluated outcomes of synchronous or delayed kidney Tx in patients with lung or heart-lung transplant.  Delayed living-donor kidney Tx was associated with favorable outcomes.  Synchronous cadaver kidney transplant at the time of heart-lung or lung transplant was clinically challenging.

In this retrospective study of 173 lung transplants performed at Loyola University, investigators found a correlation between heavy alcohol use in lung transplant donors and risk of developing severe primary graft dysfunction.  Those recipients had  an 8.7 times higher risk than patients who received lungs from donors who did not drink.

The Columbia group performed a retrospective analysis of 46 balloon atrial septostomies in 32 patients with severe and medically refractory PAH from 2002-2013.   There were no procedural deaths or complications. BAS was safely used as a bridge to lung transplantation or to alleviate right heart failure symptoms and/or syncope.

Ex-vivo lung reperfusion was employed to recondition marginal or rejected lung grafts. Eight out of 11 lungs were deemed suitable for transplantation after treatment. Results with regard to primary graft dysfunction were comparable to those of 28 regular transplantations.

Outcomes of patients undergoing lung transplant after LVRS were compared to those of patients undergoing LVRS or transplant alone.  OR time and LOS were longer in the combined group.  Morbidity and mortality were similar among the groups.  Post-transplant survival was substantially lower in the combined group.  However, if time from LVRS to transplan

There are few instruments to assess patient-centered outcomes after lung transplant.  The authors developed and validated a shortened version of the valued life activities disability scale for this population.  The scale was devised using 140 lung transplant participants and was validated in 84 patients before and after transplant.  The instrument ta

On March 20, 2014, a panel of the FDA gave unanimous approval for use of an ex-vivo perfusion system for improving the quality of explanted lungs prior to transplantation.  If this recommendation is followed by the FDA, such devices could be used clinically under IRB protocols.
