A new study that monitors patients who were given “on-pump” or “off-pump” coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) over a ten year time period reveals that outcomes between the two forms of heart bypass surgery are more similar than one may think.

Comments

This study confirms that both procedures are safe and produce comparable longterm results. The message for cardiac surgeons is that you do the procedure in the way that you are most comfortable with. What matters is a happy patient 10 years after the procedure.

Long-term outcome depends not on the procedure but on many other factors. Both the procedures are safe in competent hands when used judiciously.
