New Process Helps Speed Up STS Membership Admissions

Applicants for Active and International Membership in The Society of Thoracic Surgeons won’t have to wait so long to be elected into the Society. Instead of an annual election at the Annual Membership (Business) Meeting, the Bylaws were amended this past January so that Active and International applicants could be approved for membership three times a year.

Per the revised Bylaws, the STS Board of Directors will vote on pending membership applications at each in-person meeting (January, Spring, Fall). The upcoming application deadlines and Board of Directors meetings are:

• March 28, 2016 (May 15 Board of Directors Meeting)
• August 29, 2016 (October 16 Board of Directors Meeting)
• November 1, 2016 (January 22, 2017 Board of Directors Meeting)

Associate, Candidate, and Pre-Candidate Members will continue to be admitted on a rolling basis throughout the year.
