Post-operative complications occur frequently following cardiac surgery and have a significant impact on the patient experience and clinical outcomes and costs. This webinar will describe the nature and frequency of complications and their impact on short and long-term outcomes. The presenters will review the key literature in this field, the important role played by quality initiatives involving STS, ERAS Cardiac and other organizations in an effort to reduce the occurrence of post operative complications. Additionally, opportunities to broaden and potentially standardize the analysis and reporting of a range of complications beyond the STS major morbidities driving STAR ratings will be highlighted. Finally, potential future approaches for reducing post operative complications and improving patient outcomes will be reviewed.
