Schubert and colleagues developed a novel trileaflet mechanical heart valve prosthesis. They compared this device with a conventional mechanical bileaflet heart valve in vitro, evaluating hemodynamic parameters and thrombogenicity. The trileaflet valve had a larger effective orifice area and smaller pressure gradient than the bileaflet one.

In this video, the authors demonstrate the Perclose® suture mediated closure technique for closure of the femoral artery after transcatheter aortic valve replacement.

In this art of operative techniques segment, Colli and colleagues provide an illustrated description on how to perform transapical NeoChord implantation.

In this prospective single-institution study, functional status trajectory one year after intervention was compared for transcatheter (TAVR) versus surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR).  A moderate/large decline compared to preintervention status occurred in 23% of TAVR patients and 4% of SAVR patients.  A frailty index, postoperative delirium, a

Hata and colleagues performed a propensity score-matched analysis comparing 85 pairs of patients who underwent either minimally invasive mitral valve repair or chordal-sparing replacement for degenerative mitral valve regurgitation. Freedom from major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events after seven years was similar between the groups.

The authors demonstrate how to use one homograft root in reoperative infected aortic root/hemiarch reconstruction with the use of a handmade bovine pericardial aortic tube to replace the ascending aorta and unite the divided homograft.

Schroeter and colleagues sought to determine the influence of Parkinson’s disease (PD) on perioperative outcomes after cardiac surgery, given the increasing incidence of cardiac surgery in patients with PD. They performed a retrospective analysis of 130 matched patient pairs who underwent surgery from 2001 to 2013.

Diwan and colleagues retrospectively compared daytime to nighttime extubation for patients after cardiac surgery, considering outcomes for patients who were extubated early and patients who had longer intubation times.
