Lung

February 15, 2014
Over 700 lung cancer patients were surveyed at diagnosis and a mean of 54 months later regarding smoking status. 56% of those smoking at the time of diagnosis and stopped smoking 1 year later. Smoking cessation was adversely affected by second hand smoke exposure from housemates, spouses, and peers; these effects were cumulative.

The authors hypothesized that examination of more lymph nodes resulting from lung resection for NSCLC would result in fewer missed nodal metastases and be associated with better survival related to more accurate staging. Based on nearly 25,000 pts from SEER, they found the median number of nodes examined was only 6.

This video examines the example of two similar operations performed in a hospital in Spain and a hospital in Brazil, using the same uniportal VATS technique. The purpose of this video is to demonstrate how the approach by uniportal VATS offers a direct view of the hilum, giving a clear and safe view of the fissure from its anterior and most inferior aspect.

The authors removed chest tubes after video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lobectomy with serous fluid production up to 500 ml/day in 622 patients. Of them, 17 (2,8%) needed reinterventions due to recurrent pleural effusion. There was no association to the postoperative day of tube removal.

The resection of locally advanced lung cancer is generally accomplished with thoracotomy. When possible, the authors use a hybrid approach. This video illustrates two cases of invasive right upper lobe tumors. VATS exploration through a standard anterior, two-incision, approach directs a secondary counter incision.

Since video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) was described for anatomic lobectomies, many technical variations have been published. The uniportal technique, which enables the entire procedure to be performed through a single port, was recently introduced. This video shows a uniportal VATS lobectomy for lung cancer treatment.

Uniportal VATS is a safe approach for removing central tumors, but sometimes requires more extensive resections. This video highlights the feasibility of a right upper and middle bilobectomy with a tangential angioplasty of the pulmonary artery in the fissure.
November 7, 2013
Uniportal VATS is a useful approach to perform wedge resections of intraparenchymal pulmonary nodules without diagnosis and to carry out a lobectomy in cases of non-small cell lung cancer with totally incomplete fissures.
October 30, 2013
Radiotracer-guided localization of pulmonary nodules was introduced in 2000, with subsequent studies confirming its reproducibility and reliability. As more frequent small, asymptomatic masses are being identified, this technique could prevent unnecessary thoracotomies and preserve lung parenchyma.

Extrapleural pneumonectomy is a surgical resection option for the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma. This video shows a right-sided extrapleural pneumonectomy on a 60-year-old woman with mesothelioma.
