The Johns Hopkins group reviewed their postoperative complications after heart surgery in 2,477 adult patients from 2011 and 2014 to determine the effect of the number of major complications on the primary outcome of death (as well as several secondary outcomes). The study found the following rates of mortality by the number of complications:

The Johns Hopkins group reviewed their experience with mediastinal exploration for bleeding after cardiac surgery during the period from 2011 through June 2014, and retrospectively reviewed the outcomes of two categories of patients: (1) Planned Reexploration, defined as patients left open at the initial operation with a plan for a second-look proc
Cost Analysis of Physician Assistant Home Visit Program to Reduce Readmissions After Cardiac Surgery
August 23, 2016
This retrospective study analyzed the relative cost-effectiveness of a physician assistant home care (PAHC) program in terms of readmission rates, length of stay, and health care cost. The study hospital switched from a conventional discharge treatment plan (control) in September 2010 to a PAHC program.

Data from two institutions were evaluated for the period 2002-2014 including 436 patients affected by endocarditis, of whom 18% were current intravenous drug users (IVDUs). IVDUs had a lower risk of operative mortality but had an increased rate of valve-related complications, mostly related to higher rates of reinfection.

The authors enrolled 149 patients on DAPT undergoing urgent cardiac surgery in a prospective study analyzing the association between platelet reactivity and postoperative bleeding. They found that decreasing platelet reactivity correlated with an increase in calculated red blood cell loss after surgery.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) complicates recovery from cardiac surgery in up to 30% of patients, injures and impairs the function of the brain, lungs, and gut, and places patients at a 5-fold increased risk of death during hospitalization.
June 30, 2016
The authors performed a combined atrial myxoma resection with bypass grafting, using a right minithoracotomy approach. The case demonstrates the feasibility of combined minimally invasive heart surgery procedures (MICS).

This presentation describes the basic surgical techniques and steps required for successfully performing a valve-sparing root replacement.

Using University of Michigan Health and Retirement Study data, the authors evaluated marital status at the time of cardiac surgery and subsequent survival or deterioration in the ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs) independently. At follow-up, those who were married had a 19.4% incidence of death or new disability, which was simila

The authors retrospectively reviewed the postoperative TEEs on patients undergoing DCCV within 30 days after cardiac surgery that included LAA closure (n=93 patients). The presence of a residual communication between the LAA and the left atrium was 37% overall.
