Over 1400 patients with asymptomatic severe carotid stenosis were randomized to with carotid stenting or endarterectomy.  The endpoints were the composite of death, stroke, or acute MI within 30 days, or ipsilateral stroke.   Stenting was non-inferior to endarterectomy.   The rate of the composite endpoint was 3.8% vs 3.4% (stent vs surgery).  At 30

The good news continues regarding chocolate consumption!   A study involving nearly 21,000 individuals with a median follow-up of nearly 12 years correlated cardiovascular disease with quintiles of chocolate consumption.  The lowest quintile was associated with a 50% higher risk of coronary heart disease and a similar increase in stroke incidence.

This multicenter study analyzes the utility of a "Top Gun" competition in promoting simulator use and improving technical skills among 1st-year CT Surgery residents.  A coronary anastomosis simulation module was sent to most 1st-year residents in the U.S.  Fifteen residents submitted baseline and final videos for evaluation.

Provocative study that analyzes lower body perfusion in a porcine model during cardiopulmonary bypass with an actuated IABP in place to effect pulsatile perfusion.  Parameters of distal perfusion including measurement of pressures and microsphere perfusion indicate that flow distal to the balloon pump may be impaired.

This double-blind placebo-controlled trial involved 153 pts undergoing elective endovascular aortic aneurysm repair, of whom half received methylprednisolone preoperatively.  The intervention reduced the systemic inflammatory response from 92% to 27%, plasma IL-6 was decreased by 90%, and CRP, body temperature, IL-8, and TNF were also reduced.  MMP-9
