Driving Change in the Delivery of Thoracic Surgery in Africa: An Interview With Diego Gonzalez Rivas

Tuesday, June 11, 2024

At the 2024 ESTS Conference in Barcelona, Spain, Editor in Chief Joel Dunning interviewed some of the most knowledgeable thoracic surgeons from around the world to highlight the fascinating work they are doing. Stay tuned for more interviews from the meeting.

CTSNet Editor in Chief Joel Dunning spoke with Diego Gonzalez Rivas about his upcoming charitable mission to Africa. Dr. Gonzalez Rivas now has a fully equipped truck in which he can perform state-of-the-art thoracic surgeries. Typically, on surgery trips to Africa, Dr. Gonzalez Rivas encounters power outages, lack of equipment, and virtually non-existent endoscopic equipment—problems solved by his foundation’s mobile surgery unit. Dr. Gonzalez Rivas will use this vehicle to travel throughout Africa and the world offering surgeries free of charge and masterclasses for local surgeons. This mobile surgery unit will be used for the first time in Accra, Ghana, in August 2024. CTSNet is following this historic trip and highlighting Dr. Gonzalez Rivas’s work to inspire thoracic surgeons around the world to consider humanitarian work in countries that cannot afford complex thoracic surgery. They also discuss the groundbreaking SHURUI, the most advanced robotic system in the world.
