Atrial fibrillation treatment is not a separate discipline in surgery. It is integral to proper surgical intervention for as many as one-third of patients coming to surgery. As part of surgeons’ mission to provide people with the optimal and most durable outcome from surgery, the profession must achieve ubiquitous skill and deliver consistent results. In addition, for surgeons with the ability to pioneer and the dedication to collect data and work closely with electrophysiology colleagues, surgical treatment of arrhythmia is a dynamic and rapidly expanding field of endeavor.
