Murashita and colleagues reviewed the surgical outcomes of patients with intraoperatively-confirmed constrictive pericarditis. The authors divided patients into a historical group (1936- 1990) and a contemporary group (1990-2013) to compare patient presentation and analyze risk factors for negative outcomes.

Lacroix and colleagues evaluated pulmonary function, pain, and quality of life in patients who underwent robotic thoracic surgery, predominantly for non-small cell lung cancer. The authors observed no difference between preoperative and 7-month postoperative pulmonary function.
June 30, 2017
Thornblade and colleagues report an increase in off-label esophageal stent usage to treat benign esophageal perforation between 2007 and 2014, with a concomitant decrease in surgical repair and no difference in surgical drainage. Despite increased use of stents, no significant changes in short-term outcomes were observed.
June 29, 2017
Ad and colleagues compared outcomes in patients receiving a Cox Maze (CM) procedure with cryothermal energy only or with cryothermal and bipolar radiofrequency, with 298 patients in each group.

Balsam and colleagues present two cases of Mycobacterium chimaera infection following implantation of left ventricular assist devices, likely linked to bioaerosols from heater-cooler units used during surgery.
June 22, 2017
Hiraoka and colleagues compared outcomes of 337 patients receiving conventional total aortic arch repair to 58 patients receiving hybrid aortic arch repair at a single cardiovascular institution. The authors observed no differences in operative or 30-day death.

Chudgar and colleagues evaluated clinicopathologic variables and characteristics of treatment for 539 patients who had undergone pulmonary metastasectomy for soft-tissue sarcoma at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Gaudino and colleagues report a retrospective analysis of short-term outcomes following aortic valve-sparing operations (VSO) with and without reconstruction of the sinuses of Valsalva (SV). Despite the importance of the SV for aortic valve function, data evaluating SV reconstruction with VSO are limited.
May 23, 2017
The authors conducted a retrospective cohort study of 88 patients that received methylene blue (MB) for refractory vasoplegia following cardiopulmonary bypass.  Administration of MB was associated with an 8 mmHg increase in mean arterial pressure, with the peak response occurring at 2 hours after completion of dose.
