Valve Disease
May 25, 2017
May 22, 2017
A surprisingly readable Australasian manuscript on risk prediction models for cardiac surgery. Interesting that the class of dyspnoea was not captured in 5.28% of the operated patients.

Following a charitable initiative launched in 2014 to impact one million underserved people by 2020, Edwards provides a current update on progress toward that goal. Dr.
One-Year Outcomes of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement in Patients With End-Stage Renal Disease
May 17, 2017
Using data from the CoreValve US Expanding Use Study, outcomes for patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing TAVR were evaluated using an endpoint of all-cause mortality or major stoke at 1 year. Mortality at 1 year was 30%, and the stroke incidence was 2.1%. New permanent pacemaker need was 27%.

This video demonstrates the periareolar approach to mitral valve repair in a 52-year-old patient with A2 prolapse and severe, symptomatic mitral regurgitation.
April 18, 2017
The type and extent of mitral valve remodeling in response to ischemic mitral regurgitation may predict success/recurrence after mitral valve repair. The authors collected 3-dimensional data from patients with ischemic MR and from patients with normal valves and analyzed the data geometrically. Remodeling was identified by lengthening of the middle

This video demonstrates a "hemi-commando" procedure in a 64-year-old female patient with aortic root abscess involving the intervalvular fibrosa.

Steven Livesey of Southampton General Hospital, Southampton, UK, discusses the anatomy of Barlow's mitral valve and the options for correction.

The authors report here on the results of the Italian CHEETAH study, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial examining whether adding the unique inotrope levosimendan—in low doses—improves 30-day mortality after cardiac surgery in patients with perioperative LV dysfunction.

The authors describe use of a stented jugular vein graft in the mitral position in infants at a median of 8.5 months and 5.6 Kg. Hemodynamics improved substantially, with no important MR or paravalvular leak. The ratio of the narrowest subaortic dimension in systole to the actual mitral valve dimension <0.5 was associated with LV outflow tract o
