The authors studied outcomes after congenital operations in 12 programs in New York state (4,776 operations) to assess whether prolonged length of stay (PLOS) can be used as a quality measure. This study compared early and intermediate biventricular function after early arterial switch in 26 infants and 20 age-matched controls. At 1 year LV performance was similar in ASO and controls, whereas RV systolic and diastolic function remained impaired. This stresses the need for ongoing monitoring of RV function after ASO.

Fontan connections made using a lateral tunnel (LT) or extracardiac (EC) pathway were evaluated over time using MR. LT pathways generally increased in diameter while EC pathways did not. Normalized LT and EC diameters decreased relative to somatic growth, while descending aortic diameter increased in parallel with somatic growth.

The accuracy of the diagnosis in patients undergoing congenital heart surgery in a large administrative database was examined in over 14,000 patients aged 0 to 5. Patients admitted on day 1 of life and those undergoing ECMO had a much higher chance of being assigned non-cardiac diagnoses.

The cause of pectus deformities is thought to be abnormal elongation and/or distorsion of the rib cartilages. A simplified open repair is described based on the subperichondrial resection of the abnormal cartilages, and in the case of pectus excavatum, the use of an easily removable metallic strut.
