The Johns Hopkins group reviewed their postoperative complications after heart surgery in 2,477 adult patients from 2011 and 2014 to determine the effect of the number of major complications on the primary outcome of death (as well as several secondary outcomes). The study found the following rates of mortality by the number of complications:

In the FREEDOM trial, 1900 diabetic patients were randomized between coronary bypass surgery and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Of these, 451 patients had chronic kidney disease (CKD) with a GFR 30-60 mL/min/1.73m2, and the remaining patients were categorized as having no CKD.

The authors conducted a meta-analysis of propensity-scored matched patients in published studies to assess outcomes of right internal mammary artery (RIMA) and radial artery (RA) as second conduits for CABG. Eight studies included nearly 3000 matched pairs.

The impact of radial artery vs saphenous vein in patients undergoing bilateral IMA grafting was evaluated in 275 and 489 pts, respectively, using propensity score matching. Operative mortality and survival at 5, 10, and 15 years were similar. There was no influence of patient age, R vs L coronary system grafting, diabetes, or ventricular dysfunctio

The authors enrolled 149 patients on DAPT undergoing urgent cardiac surgery in a prospective study analyzing the association between platelet reactivity and postoperative bleeding. They found that decreasing platelet reactivity correlated with an increase in calculated red blood cell loss after surgery.
