Outcomes of CABG for patients in cardiogenic shock after acute MI were evaluated using data from the STS Database. The study group of nearly 5,500 patients comprised 1.5% of all CABG patients during the study period. Operative mortality was 18.7%. Mechanical circulatory support use was most common in patients with more risk factors or high clinica

In an analysis from the SYNTAX trial that randomized PCI vs CABG in patients with complex coronary disease, Milojevic et al found that patients had significantly higher rates of cardiac death after PCI, which was particularly caused by significantly higher rates of myocardial infarction-related death.

The authors of this paper aimed to study the frequency and predictors of internal mammary artery (IMA) failure in 1539 patients who underwent IMA revascularization of the left anterior descending (LAD) artery. IMA failure was defined as >75% stenosis at a follow-up of 12-18 months. They found that IMA failure occured in 8.6%.

The authors performed a randomized control study of 178 patients with heart failure and systolic dyssynchrony who were accepted for CABG, randomizing the participants into two groups: CABG alone (n=87) and CABG + concomitant epicardial CRT (n=91). CRT was activated postoperatively.

Using CMS CABG data as a denominator, the investigators examined the penetration, completeness, and representativeness of the STS database with respect to the CMS database. The investigators found that, in 2012--the most recent year analyzed--center-level penetration was 90% and patient-level penetration was 94%.

With the successful linking of the STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) database, the authors studied the extent to which the STS database represents national activity in CABG. The number of centers represented increased from 45% in 2000 to 90% in 2012. The number of CABG patients represented increased

PREVENT IV trial participants who had undergone either a RIMA or LIMA to LAD anastomosis and underwent an angiogram at 1 to 1.5 years (n=1539) were analyzed for mammary graft failure (defined as >75% stenosis).

A growing body of evidence demonstrates improved short, mid, and long term outcomes with the use of arterial conduits for coronary revascularization. Despite this, less than 10% of patients receive more than 2 arterial grafts.

The timing and dosage of preoperative ASA administration was evaluated with regard to CABG outcomes in a series of 3018 pts. Dosing within 24 hrs of surgery was associated with a 50% lower mortality rate and an 81mg dose was associated with a 50% or greater reduction in mortality compared to a 325mg dose or no ASA.
