In order to improve the diagnostic accuracy of bronchoscopy for lung cancer, epithelial cells were collected from normal appearing mucosa in the mainstem bronchus of patients suspected of having lung cancer during diagnostic bronchoscopy. The samples were evaluated with a gene expression classifier. 43% of the standard examinations were nondiagnost

Intraoperative events during VATS lobectomy should be expected. The management of these events is critical to achieving a good patient outcome. This video advocates for a preventative strategy, practicing event management, and communicating specific skills to address intraoperative events such as pulmonary artery bleeding.

This meta-analysis evaluated results from 6 studies totalling 868 patients randomized to local control (radiotherapy vs surgery) after induction therapy for NSCLC with N2 disease. Four studies evaluated induction chemotherapy, the other 2 evaluated induction chemoradiotherapy. Differences in outcomes were not significant, but there was a strong tre

This video presents a single-port VATS right upper lobe sleeve lobectomy for a stage I carcinoid tumor in a 52-year-old patient. Sleeve lobectomy is a challenging and complex procedure. Typical carcinoids occluding the right upper lobe bronchus present an ideal opportunity for sleeve upper lobectomy due to their indolent nature and excellent oncologic outcomes.

This study evaluated outcomes in patients undergoing resection for lung cancer who were found at surgery to have pleural carcinomatosis. 2.9% of registry patients were identified, of whom 49% had a macroscopic complete resection. 5-year survival in those without other metastatic disease was 29%. 5-year survival in those undergoing macroscopic comp

The ELCAP data set was evaluated for pts identified with non-solid nodules at baseline or during follow-up. 2392 (4.2%) pts had nonsolid nodules at baseline, of which 73 were diagnosed as adenocarcinoma. A new nodule was identified in an additional 485 (0.7%) pts, of whom 11 were diagnosed with adenocarcinoma. Nonsolid nodules improved in 66% of

Trials evaluating the use of surgery in stage IIIB NSCLC are lacking. This study goes some way to address that and demonstrates that surgery as part of multi-modality therapy may result in a survival benefit.

This meta-analysis of published studies evaluated outcomes of multimodality therapy including resection for superior sulcus NSCLC invading the spine. 134 articles were evaluated, which included 135 patients. 63% had induction therapy, and all underwent en bloc resection. 52% had adjuvant therapy. Survival at 3,5, and 10 years was 57%, 42%, and 27
