Comparative Histology of Aortic Dilatation Associated With Bileaflet Versus Trileaflet Aortic Valves
September 9, 2015
Resected aortas associated with a bicuspid aortic valve (BAV,n = 60) and trileaflet aortic valve (n = 24) in patients with aortic valve disease were compared with normal diameter aortas from patients undergoing cardiac transplantation (n = 16) by five histologic criteria.

Short- and mid-term outcomes of TAVR for nonagenarian (>90 years) patients in the PARTNER-1 trial were assessed for 531 pts. MACE occurred in 35% including stroke in 3.6%. Important paravalvular leak occurred in 1.4%. 30-day mortality was 4% and 3-year mortality was 48%, which compared to 44% in a matched population. QOL stabilized at 6 months

The authors of this study compared quality of life in patients at increased surgical risk who underwent either transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) or surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR).

Vinod Thourani, Michael Mack, Wilson, Szeto, Eric Roselli, and Gorav Ailawadi discuss percutaneous mitral valve repair at the 2015 STS Annual Meeting.

Outcomes of robotic vs nonrobotic cardiac surgery were evaluated using 1:2 propensity score matching of patients in the Nationwide Inpatient Sample. Operations included valves/septae (10%), coronary arteries (47%), and other. Mean costs were 7.5% higher for robotic cases. Robotic procedures had shorter length of stay (5 vs 6 days), lower mortality

The authors investigate the safety of minimally invasive Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (MA-TAVR) and its learning curve. MA-TAVR was performed by a team consisting of a cardiologist and cardiac surgeon. The patient was teated in a catheterization laboratory under conscious sedation.

This is an observational outcome study for the comparative effectiveness of SAVR–TAVR procedures for the treatment of severe aortic stenosis at 93 Italian centers.

In this manuscript the authors describe their findings in a retrospective review of prospectively obtained 5-year follow up data on 353 patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) with the CoreValve prosthesis in 8 Italian centres.Transfemoral access was used in 317 patients (89.8%); in the rest of the patients in whom the tran

The University of Virginia group retrospectively analyzed all non-emergent cardiac cases performed at their center from 2008 to 2013, and separated the nonemergent cases into two groups: "Early start" cases had an incision time before 3 PM, and "late start" cases, after 3 PM.
