Transcatheter

May 27, 2015
In this manuscript the authors describe their finding after a systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the safety and efficacy of the Mitraclip procedure for patients with functional mitral regurgitation (FMR). Overall, 875 patients were included. Every patient underwent a follow-up of at least 6 months.

In March 2015, the first successful transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) was performed at the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC) in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. In this interview, recorded via Google Hangouts, Joel Dunning talks with Atiq Rehman of Lourdes Health System, NJ, and Kamran Baig of Trent Cardiac Centre,UK, about this development.

In this manuscript the authors describe their findings in an observational study of patients undergoing either aortic valve replacement with a “sutureless” aortic valve bioprosthesis (Medtronic’s 3f Enable) or transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) with either an Edwards Sapiens XT or Medtronic CoreValve prosthesis, comparing functional and c

In this manuscript the authors describe a systematic review of 71 cases of transcatheter heart valve embolization. In 72% of the patients, the prosthesis used was a balloon expandable one. In most cases valve embolization occurred soon after implantation and it happened in the aortic direction.

In a prospective study using MRI before and within 14 days after AVR and TAVI, Crouch and co-authors demonstrated that postoperative aortic regurgitation that was higher in the TAVI group had a significant impact on increasing left atrial size and declining right ventricular function.

The authors describe the one-year results of a randomized trial comparing outcomes between transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) among an all-comers cohort of 280 patients.

Using STS/ACC registry data, the authors updated 30-day outcomes and present 1 year outcomes for TAVR pts.  Over 12,000 pts were in the registry; median age was 84, and STS predicted operative mortality risk was 7.1%.   30-day mortality was 7.0%, 1-year mortality was 23.7%.  1-year mortality was associated with advanced age, male sex, end-stage renal

This video demonstrates a transaortic approach for TAVR, through the second intercostal space. Illustrations, photos, 3D CAT scan images, and rotating fluoroscopic images are used to demonstrate this approach.

This manuscript reports on data from the UK registry from 2007 to 2012 including 3980 TAVI procedures and a 6 year follow up. The authors carry out a good analysis of trends, risk factors for mortality and results. They found little change in the characteristics of patients treated in the UK by TAVI from 2007 to 2012.

This manuscript describes the findings of a retrospective analysis of 874 consecutive high risk or inoperable patients undergoing TAVR in three different centres, evaluating outcomes after up to three years of follow up. In-hospital mortality was 5%. Early mortality was strongly associated with the occurrence of procedural complications.
